I belong to the travel community. Nothing gets on my nerves more than this ‘apparent’ differentiation between a ‘tourist’ and a ‘traveller’. As if the world didn’t have too much discrimination already, we need one here too, right?
But for those of you who don’t belong to the travel community, let me break down this debate for you. Please note that I’m elaborating on what many in the community believe, not I myself.
So, when one visits a new destination, one can do so as a tourist or as a traveller? What is this difference??

Tourist
Oxford defines a ‘tourist’ as a person who visits a place for pleasure. Her/ his trips are for a short duration. S/ he indulges in activities like sightseeing, visiting historical places or popular landmarks.
A ‘tourist’ explores only a little because of limited time.
Traveller

Oxford defines a ‘traveller’ as a person who is travelling or who often travels. S/ he goes from place to place, not just for pleasure but maybe also for exploration. Her/ his trips are usually for a long duration.
A ‘traveller’ seeks deeper experiences. S/ he immerses herself/ himself in the culture and understand the place better. S/ he also returns to the same place for more exploration.
My Annoyance
My frustration with this distinction stems from the fact that you can’t label a person either of these permanently. At times, people are short on time. So, they make do with whatever they can.

Not everyone can travel indefinitely. Not everyone has that leisure. Most have to earn a living too. Then, to stamp a condescending label on them is completely unwarranted.
On the other hand, those labelled as ‘travellers’ constantly have to live up to that title. Even if I keep their ‘superiority complex’ aside, it can be exhausting. It is challenging to always stick to a fixed way of doing things!
Also, honestly, aren’t all tourists travellers, as they ‘travel’?
Can One Be Both?

Like I said, circumstances dictate the travels people undertake. So, IMHO, a person can be both a tourist and a traveller. People are quick to attach labels. Even if you’re doing both but still get labelled, just ignore them!
You can be a long duration traveller and yet, only visit popular attractions. You can travel for a short duration, yet, travel alone. You can travel often but still prefer guided tours.
The line between tourist and traveller is thin. So, can we stop this labelling & discrimination please?
Mindful Travel

Whatever manner of travel suits you, please do that. It doesn’t matter. The only aspect that matters is that you must travel mindfully. That’s the only bit that’s not just good for all stakeholders but also one that will enhance your experience!
